El centro curatorial LA 15 cerró el 2009 con una ambiciosa propuesta donde logró reunir a poco más de 50 artistas en la muestra Chiquitolina, con trabajos de pequeño formato en diversos medios. Esto resultó en una pequeña muestra nacional de lo que ocurre en el arte contemporáneo en Puerto Rico, con expresiones que incluyeron pintura, dibujos, objetos, fotografía y vídeo, entre otros. El tema del consumerismo, ya tocado en demasía por los artistas a nivel global, en cambio estuvo efectivamente presente en las piezas más destacadas de esta exposición organizada por José Jorge Román, con una base referencial a las exhibiciones de pequeño formato iniciadas en la Isla hace más de 45 años por Luigi Marrozzinni.

The urban area of Santurce is fast evolving again into the center of the contemporary art scene in Puerto Rico, prefering the shabby streets of the urban core of this town. Just when the local art institutions are crumbling from lack of funding, private initiatives in Santurce emerge as the only alternative for the arts. Right now, the area is buzzing with opportunities, cheap rents and creative energy.

On December 25, Carlos Antonio Otero Aponte, a reporter and blogger from Puerto Rico posted a blog entry as a reaction to an article of mine in Trance Liquido. On his post he is discussing how country-relative culture, but specifically our own, is becoming more and more endangered by our ever growing desire to capitalize everything. Well, not as superfluous as I am putting this up but in a more complex scheme. In my article I was practically accusing the dominant media to only review what is important to certain events of economic “relevance”.

Uno de esos ensayos me llamó la particular atención, tras leer el escrito del artista Arnaldo Román en su página Trance Líquido, donde cuestiona la publicación en un diario local de una nota superficial acerca de los diferentes eventos de arte celebrados recientemente en Miami, donde varios artistas puertorriqueños participaron y lograron buena recepción. Román plantea el despacho del evento como una mera nota social y el descarto en esa nota de la presencia boricua con sus propuestas creativas.
